6 Red Lipsticks + How to Wear Them

Nothing feels more patriotic then a hot dog fresh from the grill and a red lip. Nothing kills the mood (or your look) more than said hot dog fresh from the grill smearing your red lip all over your face. Yup, we've all been there and done that. Thankfully I've pulled some of my favorite red lipsticks, tips, and tricks for making the most of your Fourth of July holiday.

What to Wear

NARS | Heat Wave | Semi-Matte | Orange Red
Urban Decay | 714 | Mega Matte | Bright Red (worn here)
Stila | Venezia | Liquid Lipstick | Bright Red
Sephora | 01 Always Red | Matte Bold | Classic Red (worn here)
NARS | Cruella | Velvet Matte | Scarlet Red
NARS | Vesuvio | Pure Matte | Full Bodied Red

How to Wear It

Keep the rest of your makeup simple | My favorite way to wear a bright lipstick is with a nude eye and a bit of winged liner
Go for matte! | There's a reason why all of my picks are matte or liquid formulas. They stay on your lips so much longer and are much friendlier with greasy foods
Pick a shade that works with your complexion | Not all reds are the same. Pure reds with blue undertones tend to work best for me, but I love the look of an orangey hue for those with darker complexions. Test and test until you find a color that works best for you!
Be precise | You don't necessarily need to use a liner but make sure you take your time applying. Slathering on the color in the cab on your way to fireworks probably won't be your best bet...
Prevent "bleeding" | Use a concealer stick around the edges of your mouth to keep things clean
Do the check test | Find a mirror, your front facing camera, or a friend to keep things in check. The last thing you want is to find out hours later that your lipstick is now up on your eyebrows

Personally I'll probably be pulling out my 714 or Always Red to celebrate the holiday. What will you be rocking? Are you the type to go for the red lip, classic? or do you tend to go a bit off script for the Fourth?

Loreal Lumi Cushion Foundation Review

Well, its official. My name is Sarah and I am a foundation hoarder. It's all for good reasons though, right? For me a good makeup base sets everything up. I like a product that is super light-weight, medium coverage, and glowy without looking like you're a sweaty mess. In reviewing the new Loreal Lumi Cushion Foundation I can say check, check, check.

I've seen this beautiful rose gold packaging pop up all over the UK blog scene but have been delaying purchasing it in the US. A big reason is because of how obsessed I am with my DiorSkin Air Nude foundation - which I think to be comparable in formulas. However, Dior is a luxury brand so with it comes a luxury price tag. I cry a little bit inside each time I have to make the refill purchase. Ergo I was looking for a high-street dupe.

For background, the cushion foundation craze started out in Japan/Korea - and we all can attest that their skin is flawless.

The US has been picking up on the trend over the past year but there's only been a few drugstore brands who have made the plunge. Contrasting to a normal pump or bottle of formula, the makeup itself is stored within a full cushion. You then dab your sponge/brush into the formula for a shockingly amount of coverage.

Packaging-wise I love this product. The sleek rose gold/white container looks gorgeous on my makeup stand and is super compact - perfect for traveling. I also love that there is a fairly sizable mirror in the back of the lid. Personally I'm not a huge fan of the powder-puff applicator that comes with the product. I felt that it didn't pick up enough foundation and that the texture of it actually soaked up a lot. I have been using a domed foundation brush - the same I use for my Dior foundation - and find that it covers effortlessly. I know beauty gurus like Jaclyn Hill and Lisa Eldridge use a damp beauty blender to get their effect so i'd be interested to try that out.

The formula of the Lumi Cushion Foundation is pigmented enough that gives me YSBB (your skin but better), but it doesn't cover all of my redness in one swipe. On those spots and in my T-zone I tend to have to apply a second coat. TBH I wasn't a fan of this at first. However, once I apply my concealer and set my face I fell in love with it. The luminous finish feels so light on my skin and surprisingly doesn't move throughout the day. The product also mixes seamlessly with powder and cream formulas - which can usually be an issue my oil-based Dior.

Overall it turns out i'm a fan - and thankfully enough I can give my bottle of Dior a break for everyday use. At $17 a pop it is definitely on the pricier side for drugstore, but I love seeing main-stream brands step their game up. This just reinstates Loreal as my #1 drugstore brand. Bravo Loreal, bravo.

The Loreal Lumi Cushion Foundation comes in 12 shades. I wear W3 Nude Beige.

June Beauty Favorites

Every season is always fun for switching up beauty products but I feel like Summer is when I really get into my groove. Add a bit of color to my face, some blonde bits in my hair, and everything just works so much better. These favorites are ones that I've been loving for a while now; most have even showed their faces in a previous monthly round-up. All of these products are also ones that I would definitely purchase again. That's when ya know you've got a good bunch!

Laura Mercier Lip Glace, Bare Baby
Glossier BalmDotcom, Rose (review here with 20% discount - http://bff.glossier.com/duNsL)

Summer lips means the pinker + glossier the better! I've been loving this Laura Mercier lip gloss when I want a pop of shine on top of a balm. It's sheer, high-shine formula glides on so nicely and is never sticky. It has a light sweet smell - a bit reminiscent of a cupcake - but it's not too overbearing. When I want a genuine good ol' chapstick I break out the Glossier Balm. I tend to throw a layer of it on before I get into bed and my lips are still covered come morning. I also keep it at my desk so I have it on hand to fight off that dry AC air.

Charlotte Tilbury Eyes to Mesmerize, Mona Lisa

This cream shadow was in my March favorites but it's still a star in my book. Although I tend to go for warm-toned shades come this time of year, this cool-toned brown is constantly thrown into my makeup bag. I blend it all over my lid and layer on black mascara when I want a look that's a bit more dramatic, yet still daytime worthy. The shade is amazing for making blue eyes pop as well!

Too Faced Soleil Matte Bronzer, Milk Chocolate
Urban Decay Naked Skin Concealer, Light Warm
Diorskin Nude Air Serum Foundation, Light Beige (review here)

Notice a trend here? Light formulas and warmth. This Dior foundation is still #1 in my book (although I have a contender in my arsenal now *cough cough tomorrow's post*). It provides such great coverage with just a few drops. Mixed with my Urban Decay concealer, I'm set with a glowy yet light base. Since my face is usually lighter than my body I've been loving this Too Faced bronzer as a way to warm things up. I apply it with a large fluffy brush all over the edges of my face, down my neck, and even on my décolleté. The matte coloring is perfect for not making you look like an orange disco ball and it smells like chocolate. I mean, c'mon.

Another favorite that doesn't fall into this category necessarily - but makes a sneak appearance in the last photo below - is a nail color. I've been loving the OPI x Hello Kitty range and "It's my bow" is a gorgeous bubblegum pink. It's bright, but not neon, and goes on gorgeously with three coats.

Are any of these products in your June makeup bag? I have a feeling July will be one of my favorite round-ups...

Tuesdays Top Picks | Zara

Tuesdays Top Picks Zara

Zara is one of those stores that's a mecca for most, but has been hit or miss for me. I've had a few bad experiences with items falling apart that have left a bad taste in my mouth. However, I can't stop myself from browsing their site and love what I've been seeing lately. The store itself tends to be really good at bringing trends straight from the runway - at a much lower price point. My favorites include their items with lots of detailing (see embroidered mirror jacket below) and the classic/tailored pieces (see black-and-white trousers above). I see you, Zara. I see you.
