Birchbox Unboxed | November

This month's box somehow came at the perfect timing, with the perfect products. With the cooler air coming in and heating units turned on I've found my skin and hair a little lackluster. I'm also on the constant hunt of picking up mini products to cart on my carry on for LA next week. This months box theme was Feeling Fancy and was all about indulging yourself to feel your best as you had into the holidays.

RUSK Hair Care Elixer Mist I had high hopes for this one: a hair serum mist that gives instant shine to your tresses. However when they say it's a mist, they mean it. I literally can't see it coming out of the nozzle and ended up spraying a ton on my hair the first time. Cue super greaseball moment. I gave it a whirl the next day but still wasn't a huge fan. I found it to be a bit too shiny, instead of having a healthy glow. Bonus points that it had a good smell! Otherwise I think I'm more comfortable sticking with my Moroccan Oil serum - since I have a bit more control over the distribution.

Temple Spa La La Lagoon Aromatic Bath & Shower Gel This is like a spa day in a bottle, with notes of mint, peppermint, and basil. I'm usually not a stickler when it comes to body washes. If it keeps me clean and doesn't contain glitter (anyone remember Art Stuff from Bath and Body Works?) i'm good with it. This formula smells so dang good though! I've packed it away for my LA suitcase and am fighting the urge to use it daily. A little dab lathers up quite well and gives you super smooth skin. I also love how the scent makes me feel super relaxed and stays with me long after I rinse off. It also seems that the full-sized bottle comes with a pump, which you don't see much with shower gels. Innovative!

Dr. Lipp Miracle Balm This is promised to be in an all-in-one product. Per the label, "Bonus: you can also use it to smooth sunburn, tame brows, and nourish thirsty skin anywhere on your body." Really the biggest appeal for me is using it as an eye gloss, even though I haven't had a chance to test out yet. Lately I've been using it as a deep-conditioning lip balm, but the product would be great for travelling. The only surprising thing I found was that it was much thicker than I had anticipated. Sometimes I find myself squeezing nonstop to get the smallest amount of product out.

Amika Nourishing Mask Ive seen this bright packaging pop up from time to time so I was super excited to see it in my box. I was also just thinking about how badly I needed a hair mask, then BAM! Simple enough: you apply the mask to your hair and let it set for a few minutes. After, you wash out. I found the smell to be great and loved how thick the mask was - some can be runny and end up all in your eyes. I did notice that my hair felt much softer and shinier after using so win/win! I would definitely like to try this one out again.

LOC One & Done Eyeshadow Stick This stuff is great! Which makes sense since the shades were handpicked by YouTube beauty star Tati Westbrook. I've been using the shade "Day Trip" - a warm copper - smudged all over my lid on lazy days. I love how you can also make the shades lighter or heavier handed by just adding some layers. This allows the color to carry over from daytime to a night out. The cream formula of the shadow stick also sets a great foundation. I've been layering a gold shimmer color from my LORAC palette on top when I want something a little more.

Most loved product: Weirdly enough I think the shower gel takes the cake for me. I've forgotten how nice it is to have a really great scent to later up with. Plus, it's an instant aromatherapy session before I hit the sheets.

Most disappointing product:  The RUSK hair mist just didn't hold up for my hair. What was supposed to be a time-saver, ended up with me loading tons of dry shampoo in my hair to cover the heavy serum.

Have you tried any of these products before? Do you have any hair mask recommendations? Let me know in the comments below!

#OOTD: Fall Exploring

With all of the busy busy going on this Fall, it has become harder to sneak away and capture the changing season. D.C. is a bit limited when it comes to foliage - compared to the North - but we were able to find a pocket of golden hues on Theodore Roosevelt Island. For those unfamiliar with the area, the island was transformed in the 30s by landscape architects as a memorial to the late President. They conceived a 'real forest' that was to mimic the natural forest that once covered the island. There are tons of gorgeous trails around the area which allow you to escape the city.

We were lucky enough to have a gorgeous Fall day. It truly felt like the leaves shone a bit brighter and the sky was a bit bluer. This outfit definitely isn't the most chic but surprisingly shows three items that have been on heavy rotation lately: my olive anorak jacket, tan bobble hat, and reflective sunnies. Layers have been my best friend lately and are so fun to mix-and-match with.

All in all I'm already sad to have Fall slip away from us. I feel like my body is going to be all out of sort with the 20-degree weather out there now, LA in less than two weeks, and then the ongoing cycle of warm/cold days. Bring on the Vitamin C...

Weekly Favorites | 11.22.15

What. A. Week. Anyone else utterly exhausted? It's been like wake, caffeinate, work, blog  work, more work, sleep, repeat. But the weekend has rolled itself around again and it's accepted with open arms! The next two weekends for me are extremely busy with a trip back home for the holidays and a plane ride out to L.A. (!!!!). I have a ton of great content coming your way so stay tuned! Think fall photo shoots, museum tours, and a lot of beauty.

After a weekend filled of highs (an ever certain album release) and lows (thinking of Paris) my favorite things this week have been anything to keep me motivated and positive...

Hearing | Is this a surprise to anyone? I've been slowly convincing the world to listen to the new One Direction album and have been succeeding. If you need any more motivation just look at Niall Horan in glasses *swoon*

Drinking | A new JRINK location has opened by my office - making two within a ten minute stroll! I snagged a bottle of Black Magic and its activated charcoal, aloe vera water, grape, and lemon have been helping me get through lazy post-drink mornings.

Wearing | A closet clean out last weekend has lent me to bringing out some old closet favorites. Included are oversized turtleneck sweaters, black bomber jackets, and of course rain boots.

Reading | I finished Girl on the Train and absolutely loved it! For those who haven't read it yet, it's a definite. The chapters continually kept me on the edge of my seat and had me flipping through the pages like it was nobody's business. Next up: the third book in the Girl with the Dragon Tattoo series. Whatcha up to now, Salander?

Trying | Every night this week i've been bringing out my inner yogi and meditating for ten minutes before bed (thanks Eden!). It has definitely relaxed my brain and helped me to sleep soundly through the night. We'll see how things continue, but even if you just need a calming voice download Headspace. Andy has LEGITIMATELY the most relaxing voice. Is it wrong to listen to on repeat?

Be sure to check out my post with Miss Spa Beauty on Instagram today (@sarahmariewagner)! I'm giving away a package of my favorite products. All you need to do is like the photo for entry. Tag a friend and you get a bonus entry! Who doesn't love spa products? Think of it as an early Christmas gift to yourself.

Seven Essential Nude Lip Products

Let's talk about lipstick! As I write this post, it is uber dreary and misty out. Isn't misty weather the worst? I feel like it's not enough to break out the umbrella but yet it just gives you that icky frizzy feeling all day. It's almost up there with wind as my least favorite weather type. Nothing's worse than wind. Let's move on shall we...

When it comes to this type of weather I always feel like motivation is low level. Take this morning for example: I rolled out of bed at the last possible minute, threw my hair in a top knot, and strategically wrapped a scarf around to cover a hole in my sweater. Things are glam.

Pre-coffee makeup usually always entails keeping everything fairly basic (not in the sense of being Starbucks lovers). On these types of days I always love pulling out one of my nude lipsticks. I feel like they're the easiest way to look pulled together, while taking the least effort. I call that a win/win! Some of these are "true nudes", but a lot of them contain a pinky hue - since that's what looks best for my peachy complexion. I've found that it's best to always match your products to what works for your skin. I also always like to go for a lustre finish so that it's easy to apply and doesn't dry out throughout the day. The best part is that majority of my favorite nude lip colors are from the drugstore, so they're friendly to your wallet.

Here's my current line-up (matching left to right in the photos):

H&M Lip Stain in "Gauzy Mauve"
NARS Gloss in "Chelsea Girls"
NARS Satin Lip Pencil in "Rikugien"
Too Faced La Creme Lipstick in "Nude Beach"
MAC Lip Liner in "Boldly Bare"
CoverGirl Colorlicious Jumbo Gloss Balm "Blush Twist 210"
MAC Lustre Lipstick in "Patisserie"

The CoverGirl and MAC lipsticks are my go-to for a daily lip. I also tend to always throw on the Chelsea Girls gloss (or a peachy hue) for a nice shine.

My best tip if you're interested in finding a good nude shade is to go in and test things out. Thankfully there are so many options out there and ones for every complexion! It's just a game of playing around with them until you find the one that works best for you. Once you do, it's magic - windy day or not.

What's your favorite nude shade?

Tuesday's Top Picks: Thanksgiving, Modernized

Thanksgiving

Yup, this post says Tuesday and it's definitely Wednesday. But ya know, sometimes life gets too busy and you don't have time to post but you also really want to share this great outfit! It happens.

I'll be real. I had a moment last night where I literally stopped in my tracks and went: "Holy crap, Thanksgiving is next week". Cue the frantic process of thinking of all of the things I need to get done before I head home to gorge on turkey and apple pie. Admittedly Thanksgiving was never my favorite holiday growing up. I was a super picky eater so anything besides mac and cheese or chicken fingers was just so unappealing to me. However, as I've grown and my tastes matured I now look forward to the holiday each year. I think a major component of that is the fact that going home is a bit too rare for me. With living in a city without a car, I'm lucky if I get to visit every three to four months. The holidays are always special because they allow everyone to slow down and come together for a few weekends of relaxation and happiness.

For my family, we spend Turkey day either at my mom's house or my aunt's (mom's house, weird! I guess that's what happens when you start living on your own). The hours are filled with watching football, having delicious cocktails, and of course indulging in all of my favorite treats. Style-wise we're definitely a bit more dressed up for this holiday. Something about eating in the fancy dining room with china makes you want to put on your best attire. I've been loving peter pan collars lately and think they're perfect for coming back home. This particular bejeweled version on the preppy plaid dress is just perfect for the holidays! I love the idea of pairing it with some opaque tights and over-the-knee suede boots for a streamlined look (also, how cute is this inexpensive Chloe-esque bag and this draped coat?!)

Beauty-wise I usually like to keep things fresh on the face. Being home reminds me of feeling youthful a bit, so it's nice to add some glow to your cheeks with a rosy blush and bronzer! This bright tangerine-red lipstick is so gorgeous to me and I love how it provides a pop of color.

What are your Thanksgiving traditions? Is your family more relaxed or dressy for the holiday? Check out my favorite collared dresses below!

Sephora VIB Haul

The annual Sephora VIB sale is legitimately like a beauty lover's idea of Christmas. Sephora is a brand that rarely does sales, so when they do everyone pays attention. For me the extra 20% off was a chance to purchase the items i've been eyeing up forever - while also stocking up on a few favorites that have been running out.

New Finds

I've been having a major obsession with everything Kat Von D at the moment. Inspired by her tattoo artistry, all of Kat's items are extremely high pigmented, blendable, and set for the long haul. Her Shade and Light contour palette has been on my radar since its release and I was so happy to finally pick it up. This palette is filled with three 'light' shades (which I've been applying under my eyes and in my T zone to set my concealer) and three 'shade' shades (which I've been using as my contour). The colors are so easy to blend and give the skin the perfect finish. I also find it so interesting that the concept is based off of her sketches and the usage of shadows and lights in facial features.

The Shade and Light Contour Brush is the perfect counterpart for application. With a two sided wand it allows you to seamlessly use the product while keeping things precise. The bristles are so soft and I love that it comes in this protective case for traveling.

Another KVD favorite is the Metal Crush Eyeshadow I picked up in Raw Power - a beautiful cranberry color. You guys, this stuff is amazing! The formula is amazingly pigmented and buttery. There are 11 gorgeous shades - some for the not faint of heart - however Raw Power is the most amazing fall shade. I'd love to see the brighter shades (such as Paranoid, the metallic Cobalt shade) as an eyeliner but I think that the other more neutral shades are great for everyday wear.

Old Loves

With the 20% discount I also wanted to make sure to stock up on products that are running a bit low. Why does it always seem like all of my makeup runs out at one time? It's truly inconvenient. I also snagged an extra NARS Creamy Concealer in Vanilla and another Anastasia Dipbrow Pomade in Taupe. Not even joking, my last pomade had lasted me for a year and a half so it wasn't too shocking to grab another. This stuff is SUPER long-lasting, and at $18 a pop it's a great investment!

Did you snag anything from the Sephora sale? What is on your beauty wish list? Bonus points if you recognize the four little fellas peepin' out of my palette mirror!

Weekly Favorites and New Specs | 11.8.15

We're truly in the thick of Fall now. This season seems to bring a lot of things: the slowing down of schedules, the soaking up of warmer weather's last moments, and the feeling of coming home. Thankfully the past week has been a less hectic one - which I've been waiting on for a while. I was able to catch up on some errands and spend time with some friends I haven't seen in a while. I also got the chance to cook more at home and to get back into a gym routine. It's about dang time!

I truly love this time of year fashion-wise as all of the warm colors and layers come out to play. Fall also seems like a great time of year to take risks and try new trends out. For me, it's been introducing some new colors to my closet (hellooooo burnt orange!) and playing around with fun accessories.

I received these tortoise shell glasses from GlassesShop.com a few weeks ago and have been finding them to be the perfect finishing touch to weekend wear. Thankfully I don't need glasses on a daily basis, but these are great for when my eyes are a bit stressed from long days at the computer between work and blog editing. I also love how easy they are to throw on and feel pulled together. I find that I can wear so much less eye makeup and still look chic. Even better, you just feel smarter with glasses.

GlassesShop.com has so many choices of frames, and they're definitely great for when you want an inexpensive pair to throw in your bag and go. They have a large range of prescription eyeglasses and sunglasses, and even better, you can get your first pair free

Bottom line: they're cheap glasses that just so happen to look great!

Right now, all of my readers can get 50% off on eyeglasses and sunglasses with free lenses (sales frames excluded). Just add code GSHOT50 and be on your way to being spec-tacular! (I couldn't make it out of this post without at least adding in one glasses pun...)

Some of my other favorite fall accessories? Give me a berry lip, cute ankle booties, and an oversized scarf - plus some leaves to frolic around it.

What's your favorite fall accessory? Let me know in the comments!

Holiday Prep

As we're officially in mid-November, it's time to start thinking about the Holidays. I made a goal for myself to prepare better this year - as I tend to find myself on December 20th going 'oh crap'. You know those moments. You have months to prepare and then you end up scrapping up some rando gift from the corner store. Not this year, Sarah.

I've decided to share my holiday planning in case you're looking for some holiday inspiration (or help). If you haven't noticed there's a new "Gift Guide" tab in the header above. I've created three curated lists that should cover everyone on your list. Best part? Everything is under $100 for you savvy shoppers out there. You can just hover over each photo for the price and then click through to see the item in detail.

I will continue to update the lists throughout the season so be sure to keep checking back! There's so many great items on there - even things that I may be adding to my wishlist.

Also, I've started a winter Pinterest board to collect all things merry + bright. Go ahead and follow it to see my favorite recipes, holiday inspired looks, and photos from around the web!

Can't wait to share the season with you all. Have you started your shopping yet?

H&M Beauty Review

I know I wasn't the only one who was super excited when H&M announced that they were creating a beauty line. Their store is the place I tend to go to when I want something specifically; since there always is such a large range at a great price! The same goes for their newest addition. It's a collection of 700+ makeup, fragrance, hair, and bodycare pieces that have been described as "fashion for the face". Their products also tend to range from the everyday basics to the super dramatic night-out pieces.

When I first spotted the line in my local store I knew I had to have it. First off, the packaging is so clean and lovely. The palettes remind me of the latest Tom Ford line (especially the cream blushers), with a little less of weight in the plastic. Everything is simplified in the best way possible with no cheesy branding or heavy patterns - albeit the hair and shower products are a bit more colorful.

I happened to snag three products: the cream blusher in "Dusty Rose", cream eyeshadow in "Sirocco",  and the lip stain in "Gauzy Mauve"

I haven't invested in a cream blush yet so I knew snagging one at a low cost would be a good investment. I'm still not a fan of using this over any powder bases, but do like the creamy application when I wear it with a BB cream or dewy foundation. I feel like this would be a great addition to my Summer routine. I also love the color pigmentation - just one sweep on the cheeks with my fingers and I look freshly flushed.

The eyeshadow was an instant grab the second I swatched it. The color is just so creamy and easy to apply. I tend to use my fingers to smear it over the lid and blend out for an effortless bronzed eye. It can be difficult to layer - as it dries to a powdered finish - but it's perfect when you're on the go or looking for a lighter look.

Lastly, the lip stain was probably the one I was most excited about upon purchase. However, it does have a bit of a strange taste and is definitely more watered down than I had anticipated. Nonetheless, one swatch across your lips leaves a super long lasting color without being too intensified. I love to use this on my non-makeup days when I know I can't be bothered with touch ups. Note: it definitely helps to scrub your lips prior to application! Otherwise, you can be left with a darker stain around the edge of your lips once it settles.

Overall the line is filled with great choices and I can't wait to get my hands on more. I'd love to pick up one of their cream lipsticks, a bronzer, rose hand cream, and the salt water cream. See all of my other wish list picks below...

Have you tried the line yet? If not, what are you looking to try? Let me know in the comments below!

Weekly Favorites (and an Instagram Roundup) | 11.1.15.

Happy Friday, all! I figured it was a while since I did a round-up of everything I've been loving on Instagram lately. I've been travelling quite a bit lately so most of my outfits have relied on being comfortable and easy to throw into a suitcase. Then whenever I have some spare time it's all about relaxing with a great book and my favorite accessories.

On another note, Nordstrom is currently having a massive 40% Fall Clearance sale! Some of my pieces below were snagged from Nordstrom and I love the selection they have. Just bop over to their website to find some truly great deals.

V Neck Tunic, Red Beauty | Sunglasses (on sale for $9.99!) | Jacket - Zara last season (same style in grey, love this) | Scarf - Old Navy last season (love this color for the holiday season) | Bag

Hat | Glasses | Shirt | Pom Poms | Lip Liner, Classic Red | Cream Lip Stain, Always Red | Skirt - Forever 21 (not online but I love this longer version as well) | Bangles

Boyfriend Jeans - Old Navy, old (similar)| Shoes - Zara, old (the version this year are magic!)

Glasses | Eyelash Curler | Palette (did you catch the review I did on this yesterday?)

Here are some other things I've been loving lately...
  • This 5-ingredient pear pomegranate salad not also looks beautiful, but delicious!
  • I read this article about moving somewhere by yourself and it's amazing how spot on it is. In fact, I just re-read it (and it's still as good).
  • This article about social media has been spreading like wildfire over the internet. What are your thoughts on it? Does social media really give an unfair look at people's lives? On the same note, I loved this video by essiebutton as she took a 48-hour digital detox. Would you make the same plunge?
  • Holy cow, I wish I had the money to spend on this Urban Decay eyeshadow collection. Could you imagine the possibilities?!
  • All of the holiday movies you can stream on Netflix...
  • ....and then after you can spend Chrissmukkah with the Cohens by watching every single episode of The OC!
  • I just bought this dupe of a Free People top I've been eyeing for ages but couldn't make the splurge on. The colors are perfect for Fall.

Hope you all have a great weekend!
