Weekly Favorites: Week of 5.24.15 (Sundays are for Recharging)

Sometimes you forget how great an extra day off of work truly is. I spent the Memorial Day weekend down in Virginia Beach with friends for a housewarming/birthday party. We got to enjoy the beach, roofless Jeep rides, and plenty of Orange and Grapefruit crushes. It was hard to pack up and come back to the city but I'm already counting down the time until my next beach trip (less than three weeks away)!

I feel like you always need a weekend after the weekend just to recharge and replenish. When I came home on Sunday the first thing I did was lounge in bed, put on a face mask, and watch a long series of Law and Order SVU. Here are some of my other favorite products I like to use on Sundays to get things back on track:

J.R. Walkins Sugar & Sage Body Scrub in Coconut Milk & Honey
Lush's Cosmetic Warrior Face Mask
Biore Self Heating One Minute Mask
Eos Lip Balm in Honeysuckle Honeydew

Add in a fresh coat of polish, something to read, and my Diptyque candle for a relaxing evening.
What is your Sunday routine?

Black is (Always) Back

Black is (Always) Back

I blame a certain 'Steal My Girl' look at the Billboards for my all-black obsession lately. I think of this is the grown-up concert outfit - when you want to be a little edgy yet still chic. I think the most important thing to an all-black outfit is to balance it with more feminine accessories. Think a bright red lip, patterned bag, and strappy heels.

Now I'm in major concert dreamin' mode...

What's In My Bag?

I'm the kind of person who is terrified of being without that one 'essential' that isn't really an essential. Therefore, I decided to become a bag lady and carry around my life. Here are the things that I've kept in arms reach lately:
  • My iPhone (always)
  • Sunglasses (at least one pair)
  • Hand lotion (my all-time favorite is Yu-Be but I'm also loving the new Eos lotion)
  • A few stackable rings to throw on for sporadic happy hours
  • Kate Spade "Live Colorfully" rollerball (thanks Jordan + Jenna!)
  • NYX brown pencil and brush
  • Hollywood Fashion Tape for any outfit mishaps
  • Lip stick/balm/gloss (lately it's been the Clinique 'Color Pop' in Sweet Pop)
  • Face powder
  • Mini Hair Brush
  • Headphones (these buds are amazing and under $7!)
  • Agenda (I just got my August - 2016 agenda from ban.do and am in LOVE! Snag it here before they sell out)
  • Quick healthy snack
What are your daily essentials? Do we have any of the same? Let me know below!

Weekly Favorites | Week of 5.17.15

One week til Memorial Day weekend, one week til Memorial Day Weekend.... I feel like I've been repeating this in my head for so long but now it's sneaking up on us. I am going to be on the road for the next two weeks so this weekend was an important one to catch up on some housekeeping things. I also got the chance to celebrate Faith's birthday with some of my favorite girlfriends, which was a blast! We snagged brunch at Policy, strolled around Georgetown with stops at Pinkberry and H&M home, and then topped off the night with Thai at DC Noodles (the best modern decor) and drinks/dancing out on U Street.

After doing blog prep all day, last night I relaxed a bit with the Billboards and a block of brie - the best kind of combination. Of course my attention was focused on One Direction and Taylor Swift who equally killed it at the show. Listening to snippets of 1D's music last night has me craving it all day long today, so lets just say it's on repeat. Can we also talk about the badassery that went on in Taylor's 'Bad Blood' video? Girl squad on point. (If you missed it, you can now check it out on YouTube!)

I'm also keeping things light and fresh today with some Diptyque lotion, pink gloss, and my favorite Kate Spade studs.

Currently Craving/Loving:

  • New lip shades from NARS (I'm talkin' Heat Wave and Schiap for the Summer)
  • A cute umbrella. I'm a little late on this one as I've been caught in many downpours but I'm loving this one from Hunter
  • A Fashion Police report from the Billboards. I use to love tuning into the FP show after awards, but have been missing out on it since Joan was no longer part of it
  • Catching up on great TV tonight! For the first time I'm going to attempt to watch The Bachelorette - the multi-hour long premieres are always too extensive for me. I also can't wait to see the Bruce Jenner special. Did anyone catch it?
  • Time off. Is it vacation time yet? This upcoming weekend will be a nice glimpse into my weeklong OBX trip. I love this post from J. Lynn Designery about ways to ensure your vacay is made the most of! Three words: try the squid.
  • Tamira's post on ways you can improve your blog and Instagram photos.

What was your favorite part of the Billboards? I'm still awing over Tay's white sparkle jumpsuit!

Weekend Update

1. enjoying a quiet Saturday morning with espresso, glossies, and fresh peonies // 2. soaking in the warm weather on the patio // 3. brunch at one of my favorite spots after church // 4. celebrating mothers day via long-distance with this gorgeous print from Paper Source // 5. the last day of my uber long hair // 6. fresh faced essentials for the hot weather // 7. my go-to outfit of lately: sneaks, white jeans, black tee, and a bright bag // 8. enjoying a glass of pinot grigio with Lydia + King // 9. post-hair cut and finally learning how to style it

Dear Friday, it's always so good to see you here. This week (thankfully) calmed down a bit but I still felt like I was running around like a mad woman. I'm looking forward to spending the weekend with friends enjoying the nice weather - including a very special birthday night out for Ms. Pierce! Bring on the champagne and One Direction sing-a-longs.

Next week brings another hectic few days so I also will be sure to make some time for a face mask and wine while watching the Billboards - or should we say the Taylor-Swift-Takes-Over-the-Nation-a'Thon-2015. Bad Blood premiere, amiright?

Hope your weekend is filled with your favorite things! Follow along on snapchat and Instagram for all of my rambling chaos.

Summer Staples

Summer Staples
I feel like my inner boho comes out during Summer. Anything breezy, light, and glowy is right up my alley. I've been trying to keep a low spending profile lately so I can save up to invest in my favorite warm weather things:
  • Nude Heels // Love the idea of matching tan legs with nude shoes. This pair from Sole Society is high 'to buy' list (I'm still on a wait list for them, womp)
  • Linen Shorts // throwing these on with a white tee is my idea of a perfect outfit to wear to a ballgame. This pair with the bowed top are so fun!
  • Swing Dresses // If I could live in one item forever it would be swing dresses. I usually love ones that have a boho patten on them, but am drawn to the bold prints and colors this season. This palm dress and this bright color are great for beachy getaways
  • Sunnies + Baubles // I never thought that cat eyed glasses could look good on my face shape but am finding that the less aggressive cat eyed shape is universally flattering - especially in a light tortoise color like this pair from Asos. I'm also still looking to buy the perfect ear cuff. Paired with a loose ponytail and maxi dress, it is the coolest - and only - accessory you need. I also always keep a few dainty midi rings around to throw on. They're super fun to stack or just wear individually
  • Glowy Makeup // Glowing makeup is great all year round, but looks a billion times better when layered over a tan. Give me a bronzed eye and pink glossy lip and I'm done. I snagged this lipstick from Clinique last weekend and have been wearing it on the reg
Do you have summer staples already on your list? If so, what are you eyeing up the most? Here's to wishin' for the weekend!

Florals with Kate

Remember that time I said I was obsessed with midi skirts? Yup, that still holds true. The thing that I love even more though are inexpensive midi skirts. Like, super inexpensive midi skirts. Now lets be real: I've made a promise to myself to cut back on buying the cheaper 'trendier' items from places like F21 and H&M. However, if I can find a great deal - with keeping great quality - than I'm in!

Even more so, I love to pair thrifty items with more expensive pieces. In this case it is my less-than-$20 floral skirt with my Kate Spade cross body bag. This bag means more to me than just a great statement piece. It is my first KS purse and I couldn't be more in love with it! I snagged it at their store during a crazy sale they were having. This was after the Lilly at Target fiasco and we were down in the dumps. We decided to swing by the Outlets and landed upon a 40% off + an additional 25% sale at Kate Spade. Yes, I'll give you a moment to take that in. This bag was already reduced down so it was a major steal! I knew I couldn't say no and the lipstick color is perfect for Summer.

The skirt is from my go-to deal site Groopdealz. The name itself kills me but the site has great finds! I've gotten a ton of jewelry and clothing from there - and they haven't let me down yet quality wise. Shipping is also priced per item so you won't get smacked with huge costs for just getting one thing. Unfortunately the deals are timely so this one is already off the site, but they come out with new things daily.

This outfit was perfect for grabbing an early-morning coffee and scone from my favorite local coffee shop - Northside Social. I had a lavender lemon scone and it was freakin' delicious. Lydia had a nutella pop-tart, and it looks as good as it tasted.

Fun detail of this shoot: this wall is actually part of my favorite Mexican restaurant, Mexicali Blues. We also were lucky enough to have some sun peak through the clouds and somehow land magically near my head. Cue yellow hair, but you can't win them all!

Face: L'Oreal Infallible Pro-Matte Foundation in Shell Beige | NYX Born to Glow Liquid Illuminator in Sun Beam | Clinique Chubby Stick Sculpting Contour in Curvy Contour
Eyes: Urban Decay Eyeshadow Primer Potion Tube in Sin | Anastasia Dipbrow Pomade in Taupe | NYX Boudoir Mascara in Pin-Up Tease
Lips: Clinique Chubby Stick in Woppin' Watermelon

Now that it's 90 degrees out this post feels much more relevant. Days like today always make me want to put on the least amount of things as possible: including clothes, hair/body products, and makeup. This is a look I've been reaching for lately - sometimes unintentionally. Each product seems to do its job while keeping things entirely fresh and minimal on the face.

I've raved about the L'Oreal Infallible Pro-Matte foundation in my April Favorites post but I can't stop grabbing it from my makeup bag. The consistency is perfect for these muggy days and keeps a fresh glow throughout the day. I also snagged the Clinique Chubby Stick in Woppin' Watermelon (I blame this on Faith + Sarah's love of it) and have been applying it daily. Clinique has been #1 on my list lately, and for good reasons. My eye is immediately drawn to their counter which is bright and fresh. All of the products are also nourishing and light-weight in consistency. This pop of juicy pink is no exception and is great for the Summer months.

On another note, I have been on a major makeup kick lately so you'll probably be seeing more of these posts in the upcoming months. Although fashion will still play a major role in the blog, makeup has become something that's so fun and relaxing for me. One of the best parts of my day is when I sit down in the morning with Ben Rector radio on and apply my makeup. It's super calming and a great way to start my day.

It doesn't help that they're opening a Sephora in my neighborhood this weekend. I don't have nearly enough willpower to not pop in there after a hard work day.

Let me know if there's any specific looks/things you want to see! I'm also getting my semi-annual haircut today so fingers crossed that it looks good.

Weekly Favorites | Week of 5.10.15

Well, when they say Mondays kick you in the butt they don't lie (they say that, right?). I had written this post yesterday but of course had to add in this fun story from my morning commute. Turns out the metro system had a smoke emergency and they shut down the service. After trying multiple busses - which tended to stop every block - my roommate and myself decided to just strap up and walk the way in to work. The positive spin on things was that I got my a.m. cardio, but it was a humid 2.5 mile stroll. Oy.

Back to the original content: This weekend was made to be a relaxing one. I grabbed dinner and some sangria with a friend on Friday then was lucky enough to catch a Olsen marathon on TV. Within five minutes of "Holiday in the Sun" I was reminded how much makeup envy I have from that show. Cue the glossy bronze eyes that have been popping into my makeup routine for the weekend.

Saturday was spent running around town and laying out with a good book. It was a hot one but it was lovely to get some sun, for once. I kind of forget how much the sun wears you out so another movie marathon night was used up - this time with "Sweet Home Alabama". I went out to Eastern Market on Sunday morning for church, lunch at Medium Rare (yum!), and strolling with iced coffees. I finally snagged a blue mason jar that I had been eyeing for a while. It currently is housing my peonies on our coffee table and the pop of blue is great for my neutral living room. The night ended with some hockey viewing and margaritas with friends.

How was your weekends? Let me know your favorite moment!

Currently Craving

  • After seeing Alix from I Covet Thee swooning over the red cream lip stain from Sephora, I think I need to swing by Georgetown to snag it
  • I ordered slip-on Converse sneakers from DSW but unfortunately they are a bit too big. As all other sizes are sold out it looks like I'll be going for the regular lace-up sneakers instead. Any other contenders out there?
  • Yes, I'm still daydreaming about making a gallery wall in our living room. My eyes have been drawn to the lovely prints on Etsy
  • After playing around with my stock camera lenses for a while now, I know the #1 item on my birthday list will be a 50mm lens. Any recommendations?
  • I'm heading to the OBX for a week in June and am already swooning over beachy finds. This twist scarf from ban.do is at the top of my list
  • Loving this flowy top from ASOS

P.S. Have ya'll been seeing the sneak peeks for Taylor's "Bad Blood" video? Spoiler alert: Gigi Hadid, Lena Dunham, Kendrick Lamar, Hailee Steinfeld, Ellie Goulding, Hayley Williams, Zendaya, and Lily Aldridge are all set to be in it. Can you say may-jah girl power moment?

Midi Mania

I can officially confirm that midi skirts are my favorite item to wear. What started as a trend last fall has continued into the warm-weather months - and into my closet. With living in the city and surviving the wind tunnels that exist between the buildings a longer skirt has been my savior. Trust me, the whole Marilyn Monroe moment on the streets of downtown isn't as glamorous as it looks.

Fit-wise the thicker waistbands tend to emphasize the waist the best. I also try to look for an A-line style that flows out from the waist and lands right around the mid-calf. This style lands for a very feminine silhouette that's flattering on anyone!

It's always important to pair the fuller skirt with a tighter top. I tend to rock mine with a v-neck tee tucked in to keep things less stiff. Add in some open toed shoes, mirrored sunglasses, and an edgy bag to keep things modern. To bring the outfit into a nighttime feel you can throw on a structured jacket - moto pieces look awesome!

If you're more adventurous, snag a skirt with a bold print. Florals and gingham are hot choices this season pattern-wise. Also, how cute is the pineapple skirt?

I'm sure the midi craze hasn't ended for me and will continue throughout summer. Some of my favorite ones (all under $100!) are linked below. Have you jumped on the bandwagon yet?

Keepin' Things Glossy

Glosses are a love/hate relationship for me. Love: their shine the ease of application. Hate: windy days that result in sticky hair. When I do grab a gloss I usually go for ones that are pink and have lasting power. If I’m gonna apply it, it better last.

Weekly Favorites | Week of 5.3.15

1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8.

Well, by now we all know what day it is - but that doesn't make it any less exciting! Although most people don't know this day is actually to celebrate a war victory (thanks Wiki) I like to use it to highlight my favorite Mexican dishes. For me this means lots of margaritas, dance-y music, and bright colors.

My inspiration for the week falls into these categories and keeping all things fun. It's an ultra busy week for me inside and outside of the office so I'll try to do my best to keep up with exciting posts! I can't wait to share with you the project I'm going to be working on. Lets just say it'll include lots of traveling and photographs around the DC area - fingers crossed for sunny days and rain-free nights!

This past weekend was spent back home celebrating my grandfather's birthday. Interestingly enough, both of my grandfathers birthdays were this weekend: my mom's side on Saturday and dad's side on Sunday. This meant lots of love and celebrating with family. I'm looking forward to keeping things low-key (and travel free) this upcoming weekend. Here are some other fun things going on:

Hope you have a fun week!

Spring Cleaning

Tis the season for realizing how much crap you've collected over the last year. I don't think I'm necessarily a hoarder but there's moments where I look in my closet and wonder where the heck everything came from.

My clothes are a whole different story. I'm still convincing myself to go through them, but in the meantime I figured I'd share some minor things I use to keep the other areas of my apartment together. I find that if you spend a few minutes cleaning up clutter each day it's much easier to keep things cleaner overall. One of my favorite solutions is ensuring that everything has a place. Think of things like remotes, wires, and other accessories you use on a daily basis but aren't necessarily aesthetically appealing.
